Meet Rose Gurr
By Mother Chandra R. Om and Family

Aloha from my vegetarian self, my vegetarian family, and my vegetarian friends. Mahalo for offering a wonderful education and inspiration to vegetarians and the curious, alike.

I have been having a most interesting vegetarian experience during the past few years. Although, myself and my children have been lacto-vegetarian for many years, one of our new friends, Mrs. Rose Gurr, (a mother of three, grandmother of five, and several on the way), is a high school teacher serving all Oahu, and although she herself is not a practicing vegetarian, she is religious, spiritual and compassionate towards vegetarians, and genuinely interested; so much so that she again and again extends herself, and deliciously accommodates our dietary preference by creating the most beautiful and palatable recipes by her own imagination.

I have the utmost love and respect for this fine lady and I just could not keep from sharing her with you, in hopes that you will share her with the entire community and the world. Many of us can learn so much from Mrs. Rose Gurr, about decent humane, courteous, good-hearted, gracious conduct, good behavior, and friendliness. She is an excellent teacher. After she gave a whole Saturday to teach my children and myself a free private lesson in whole-wheat bread-making procedures and special techniques, I began to feel too privileged. The lesson was so superior. Her hands and fingertips are so flexible and subtle; they seem to also be made of dough. I realized this should be broadcast for the whole world to learn how Rose has been offering this great love to her family, friends and neighbors all her life. She bakes fresh bread for her family and friends and neighbors, nearly every day. At age 53, you can imagine I have seen hundreds of bread makers, however, this bread maker is extra special. Whole wheat bread making is not her only gift - her talent totally blooms in the kitchen.

Knowing that her faith instructs, to be moderate in eating meat, and there are certain designated and observed fasting days, and that she believes everyone has the freedom to control their own diet, as they personally desire, she is already expressing awareness of this vegetarian matter. Plus, Rose involves her entire family in caring for a most beautiful fruit and vegetable garden at her home.

When her vegetarian friends come to visit, she offers them bounties of fruits, nectars, vegetables and grains, and a multitude of vegetarian baked creations, and freshly harvested greens, and other perfect vegetables from her own garden, and honey and Polynesian taro recipes, and bananas, coconuts and so much more. Mrs. Rose Gurr is an amazing Samoan gardener. Her whole family, and probably 95% of her friends are meat eating. Yet, at her son’s wedding, she specially prepared a ten-course vegetarian meal to serve to her vegetarian friends - how many people do you know who will have a major party going on and everyone is enjoying the same major feast, and the hostess specially prepares an additional feast to accommodate just a few vegetarians? Also, one time, in her own home, she involved all of her family members in preparing a fabulous fifteen-course vegetarian dinner party, celebrating myself and my family, only because we are vegetarian. She invited a couple visiting lady ministers from her church to join in the celebration. Have you ever met this kind of person?

I wish you can meet Rose and see how darling she is, and by having her on your Tasty and Meatless program, it will have a great educational impact on Rose’s community, because Rose is a vitally important member of Oahu’s educational system, and her participation will be received with love, interest, and respect. Promoting vegetarian diet will prevent high blood pressure, heart disease, and many other ailments which attack all of the communities of this nation, even Rose’s community.
